What is Hyaluronidase?
Hyalase™ is an enzyme which breaks down hyaluronic acid and is commonly called a dissolving enzyme for hyaluronic acid (a component of dermal fillers, but also naturally occurring in the skin and soft tissues).
Hyalase™ (hyaluronidase 1500 units) is licensed and commonly used to boost absorption or dispersal of drugs injected into the skin. However, dissolving dermal fillers is not a licensed indication. There is also no direct scientific equation indicating the exact quantity of hyaluronidase to use, it is a matter of judgment and experience. Occasionally dermal fillers need to be dissolved when the treatment outcome is unacceptable, they have migrated, caused swelling, or when an adverse reaction to the implant has occurred, or there is a possibility of vascular occlusion and/or impending necrosis (tissue death) which could lead to the compromise of healthy tissues.

How Does the Procedure Work?
Dr Sabrina will often use an ultrasound to scan the area prior to the dissolving injection, to ensure a targeted technique is used to dissolve the filler. Often a numbing cream is applied for 15 minutes prior to the procedure.
The hyaluronidase is then injected into the filler pocket using a needle/cannula. Immediately after, a vigorous massage is performed to help break down the filler. The whole procedure takes around 15 minutes.

The questions patients ask most often, answered by the clinic. If yours isn’t here, ask us directly - we would be delighted to help.
- Following the dissolving agent you can expect to see results immediately, but it can take 24-48 hours for the final result.
- There is minimal downtime with dissolving injections, however you might experience some bruising, redness or swelling in the treated area. If this happens, it usually subsides within a matter of days, and can be easily covered by makeup.
- No, as a numbing cream is usually applied beforehand.
- Most often 1-2 dissolving injections are required. Rarely, for dissolving large volumes of certain types of dermal fillers, more than 2 injections may be required.
- Following treatment, an irregularity in skin contour, incomplete improvement, or an "overcorrection" with a hollow may occur. This can be improved with further treatments like skin tightening, dermal fillers or eyelid surgery. Rare risks include anaphylaxis, which is why Dr Sabrina and her team recommend a patch test pre-procedure and also monitor you for an hour post-procedure.
