What is Superior Sulcus / Temple Filler?
"Superior Sulcus" hollows (otherwise known as periorbital hollows, or upper-lid hollows) occur above the upper eyelids but below the orbital bone - giving the eyes a sunken "tired" appearance. Often, this condition is associated with droopy eyelids, but it can also occur as a result of an overly aggressive upper-lid blepharoplasty where too much tissue has been removed.
If correcting the droop of the upper eyelid (thus repositioning the fat) does not help, then an injection of filler into this area can restore lost volume. We can help the patient envision the final outcome by first testing with saline; however, best results are seen with a hyaluronic acid-based filler.
Temple hollows often occur over the lateral eyebrow area and make a patient look "gaunt". Fillers placed in this area can rejuvenate the "eye frame" and eyebrow and can also reduce dynamic crow's feet smile lines.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Dr Sabrina will often use an ultrasound to scan the area prior to injection to ensure the best technique to inject these areas. Dermal fillers contain an anaesthetic called lidocaine, which reduces discomfort, but often a numbing cream is applied for 15 minutes prior to the procedure.
The hyaluronic acid-based filler is then injected into the Superior Sulcus hollow or Temple hollow using a cannula. With its blunt tip, a cannula eliminates the risk of perforating any vessels and is well-suited for a high-risk area. Immediately after, the hollow cavity has been eliminated and upper-eye and lateral eyebrow hollows are dramatically lessened. The whole procedure takes around 15 minutes.

The questions patients ask most often, answered by the clinic. If yours isn’t here, ask us directly - we would be delighted to help.
- Following Superior Sulcus Filler, you can expect to see results immediately.
- There is minimal downtime with Superior Sulcus Filler, however you might experience some bruising, redness or swelling in the treated area. If this happens, it usually subsides within a matter of days, and can be easily covered by makeup.
- Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers contain an anaesthetic called lidocaine, which reduces discomfort, therefore numbing cream is usually unnecessary. However, should you be concerned about discomfort, this can easily be applied beforehand.
- The Superior Sulcus cavity is a closed compartment - therefore treatment with filler to this area can last up to two years.
- Following treatment, an irregularity in contour, incomplete improvement, or an "overcorrection" of the Superior Sulcus hollow, can occur - however this is rare.
