What is an Eyelid Bump?
An eyelid bump is just a lump or a swelling on your eyelid. It can be on the top lid or the bottom lid. To be fair, a bump can be many things. It could be a tiny white seed, a bag of fluid, or a red infection. At the end of the day, your eyelid is very busy. Your eyelid anatomy contains hair for your lashes and tiny glands that make oil. These glands keep your eyes from getting too dry. Because there is so much going on, it is easy for things to get blocked or messy. What Causes A Lump On The Eyelid?
Why did you get a bump? It usually happens for a few simple reasons. It does not mean you are not clean. Even very tidy people get them!-
Blocked Oil Glands
-
Germs (Infections)
-
Red Eyelids (Blepharitis)
-
Makeup
-
Skin Types
-
High Fat in the Blood
Is Your Eyelid Bump a Stye or a Chalazion?
People often mix these up, but they are different. It is good to know which one you have so you can treat it the right way.The Stye (Hordeolum)
- What it is: A stye is a small infection caused by germs. Think of it like a spot or a pimple on your eye.
- Symptoms:
- It is very sore and hurts when you touch it.
- It sits right where your eyelashes grow.
- It looks red and puffy.
- It often has a yellow 'head' filled with pus, similar to a spot.
- It can make the eye feel 'gritty', as if there is sand in it.
The Chalazion (Meibomian Cyst)
- What it is: This is a blocked oil hole. It is not usually an infection. The oil inside gets hard, like cold butter. This blocks the 'pipe' and makes a firm lump.
- Symptoms:
- It does not usually hurt. It just feels a bit heavy.
- It sits further back from the lashes, in the middle of the lid.
- It feels like a hard pea under the skin.
- It grows slowly. Sometimes it stays after a stye has gone away.
- If it gets very big, it can make your vision a bit blurry.
Other Common Lumps on Eyelid (Differential Diagnosis)
Most bumps are styes or chalazia. But sometimes, there are other things:-
Milia
-
Xanthelasma
-
Papillomas

When to See a Doctor: The 'LUI' Triage Key
Most of us do not want to go to the doctor for a tiny spot. But we must be sure the lump is not a skin cancer. Use the 'LUI' rule to check your eye:- L: Loss of Eyelashes: Look in the mirror. Have your eyelashes fallen out where the lump is?
- U: Ulceration: Is the skin broken? Does it bleed or get a crust that will not heal?
- I: Infiltration: Does the edge of your eyelid look bumpy or crooked instead of straight?
How Do Doctors Treat Eyelid Bumps?
If you have used the warm flannel for a month and the lump is still there, a doctor can help. There are two main ways to fix it.-
Incision and Curettage (I&C)
- The Process: The doctor will give you a tiny numbing injection (this bit stings for a second). Then they turn the lid over and make a tiny cut on the inside. They scoop the blocked oil out.
- Success Rate: This works for about 84 out of 100 people. It is the best way to ensure the lump remains away.
- Recovery: You will have a black eye for a few days, but it heals very fast.
-
Steroid Injections
- Success Rate: This works for about 61 out of 100 people.
- Risks: It can sometimes leave a white mark on your skin that does not go away.
How To Get Rid Of An Eyelid Bump At Home?
Most eyelid lumps will go away if you are very careful and follow these steps. The Warm Flannel Method
This is the best way to unblock the oil holes.- Get Ready: Get a clean flannel. Soak it in warm water. It should be warm but not too hot. You do not want to burn your skin!
- Apply: Hold the warm flannel on your closed eye for 10-15 minutes. You will need to get more warm water every few minutes to keep it warm.
- Massage: After the heat has made the oil soft, use a clean finger. Gently rub the lump towards your lashes. This helps push the blocked oil out.
- Do it Often: Do this 3 or 4 times every day. You must do it every day for it to work.
Maintain Your Eyes’ Hygiene
- No Makeup: Do not use mascara until the lump is gone. Makeup can hold germs.
- No Contacts: Wear your glasses for a week. Contact lenses can trap germs in your eye.
- Clean Lids: You can use a tiny bit of baby shampoo in water to clean the roots of your lashes with a cotton bud.
How To Prevent Eyelid Bumps?
Once your bump is gone, you will want to keep it that way. Here is how:- Omega-3: Taking fish oil pills can help keep your eye oil runny so it does not block the holes.
- Daily Wash: A 30-second eye wash in the shower every day is a lovely habit.
- Tea Tree Oil: If your eyes feel crusty, you can buy special wipes with tea tree oil to keep your lashes clean.
Conclusion
An eyelid bump is a small lump or swelling on your eyelid. Most bumps are harmless. They can occur due to blocked oil glands, small infections, or tiny skin growths. Some bumps, such as styes, can be painful, whereas others, such as chalazia or xanthelasma, are usually painless. Doctors can help if the bump doesn’t go away on its own. They may use a small operation to remove it or a steroid injection to shrink it safely. Most eyelid bumps are easy to treat and recover from quickly. Keeping your eyelids clean, using warm compresses, and seeing a doctor when needed is the best way to stay comfortable and protect your eyes. At the end of the day, your eyes are very important. Never ignore a lump that looks or feels 'wrong'.Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Our team is glad to talk you through anything before you book.
- You can start by using a warm compress and gently massaging the eyelid to unblock oil glands. Clean the area with diluted baby shampoo. Many eyelid bumps clear on their own. If it doesn’t improve, see an eye doctor
- An eyelid papilloma looks like a small skin tag. It can be smooth or rough and is usually the same colour as the surrounding skin. It may occur as a single lesion or in clusters. Treatment is often not needed unless it grows or causes discomfort.
- Not all eyelid bumps are styes. Other causes include chalazion, milia, xanthelasma, or, in rare cases, skin cancer. A doctor can confirm the cause and advise the right treatment.
- A stye does not directly cause a headache, but the pain, swelling, and eye strain can trigger one. If a headache comes with severe swelling, fever, vision changes, or severe pain, you should see a doctor.
