How to Get Rid of Double Chin?
Double chins aren’t always caused by weight gain. They can also result from extra fat deposits under the chin and neck, which are often inherited. Ageing is another common factor, as the skin loses its natural elasticity over time, leading to sagging. Interestingly, poor posture can also contribute to a double chin. When the muscles in the neck and jaw aren’t used frequently, they can weaken, and the skin may sag as a result. While there’s no quick fix for a double chin, you can reduce or even get rid of it with the right approach. Options include exercises, lifestyle changes, and even medical treatments like surgery, depending on your goals and needs.

How to Get Rid of a Double Chin Naturally?

If your double chin is due to weight gain, shedding those extra pounds can help reduce or eliminate it. The most effective approach combines a nutritious diet with regular exercise.
  1. Increase Fruits and Vegetables: Aim to eat more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  2. Eat Whole Grains: Opt for whole grains instead of refined ones.
  3. Limit Processed Foods: Try to avoid processed foods as much as possible.
  4. Select Lean Proteins: Include lean proteins like poultry and fish in your meals.
  5. Incorporate Healthy Fats: Use healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, and nuts.
  6. Opt for Low-Fat Dairy: Choose low-fat dairy products when possible.
  7. Monitor Calorie Intake: Ensure you stay within your daily calorie needs.
While eating a balanced diet, you will also have to increase your physical activities to lose weight. Your facial appearance may also slim down when you lose weight.

Exercises to Reduce Double Chin

Incorporating specific double chin exercises can also help tone the muscles around your chin and neck. Here are some exercises that may assist in reducing a double chin:

Straight Jaw Jut

  • Tilt your head upwards and look at the ceiling.
  • Push your lower jaw forward until you feel a stretch beneath your chin.
  • Hold for a count of 10.
  • Relax your jaw and put your head back in a neutral position.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Bottom Jaw Jut

  • Raise your head and look up at the ceiling.
  • Turn your head to the right.
  • Slide your bottom jaw forward.
  • Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release.
  • Repeat with head turned to the left.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Neck Stretch

  • Tilt your head back and look up at the ceiling.
  • Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
  • Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Tongue Stretch

  • Looking straight ahead, extend your tongue as far as possible.
  • Lift your tongue upward and toward your nose.
  • Hold for 10 seconds and release.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Ball Exercise

  • Place a small ball under your chin.
  • Press your chin down against the ball.
  • Repeat several times daily.

Pucker Up

  • Tilt your head back and look at the roof.
  • Pucker your lips as if you're kissing the ceiling to expand the area below your chin.
  • Put your head back in its natural position and stop puckering.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Neck Rotations

  • Sit or stand upright with your shoulders relaxed.
  • Lower your chin toward your chest, then slowly rotate your neck in a clockwise circle.
  • Throughout the exercise, maintain a relaxed and lowered posture.
  • Complete 10 rotations clockwise, then repeat 10 more counterclockwise.
  • Stick out your tongue.
  • Open your mouth as wide as it seems comfortable.
  • Expand your tongue as far as you can until your neck and chin start to stretch.
  • Hold the position for 10 seconds.
  • Release and repeat 10 times.

Ceiling Kiss

  • Sit or stand as straight as possible.
  • Tilt your head back to look at the ceiling.
  • Pucker your lips like you’re trying to kiss the ceiling.
  • Hold the pose for 5-10 seconds.
  • Repeat 15 times for one set, and perform this exercise twice a day.

Chin Tuck

  • Sit or stand upright.
  • Gently touch your chin with your index finger, but don’t press into it.
  • Slowly pull your head and neck backwards without moving your finger. The chin should not touch your finger anymore.
  • Hold the position for 10 seconds.
  • Gradually return to the starting position so your chin lightly touches your finger again.
  • Repeat this 10 times for one set, and perform 5-7 sets throughout the day.
Consistently practicing these exercises, along with maintaining a healthy diet and regular physical activity, can contribute to reducing a double chin over time.

How to Get Rid of Your Double Chin Fast? - Medical Treatments

For those seeking more immediate or pronounced results, several medical treatments are available:

Neck Lift

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, targets the area from the chin to the collarbone, addressing concerns like a double chin, "turkey neck," and neck bands. The procedure involves removing excess skin and tightening neck muscles to create a more defined jawline and smoother neck appearance.

Face-Lift

A facelift entails a surgical procedure in which excess fatty tissue and wrinkled skin from the chin and neck region are removed so that the double chin's appearance can be reduced significantly. Most of the time, this surgery will involve the use of general anaesthesia, although, in some cases, the patient might be under local anaesthesia only.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy, an aesthetic non-surgical approach, involves injecting targeted areas with a blend of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to help reduce fat and tighten skin. When applied to the area under the chin, mesotherapy aims to break down fat cells, potentially reducing the appearance of a double chin.  The procedure involves a series of injections into the submental fat (the area beneath the chin). All these injections are specifically meant to disrupt fat cells and facilitate their breakdown and further elimination from the body by its natural processes. This can result in a more contoured and defined jawline.

Endolift

Endolift is a simple, minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce the appearance of a double chin. It uses advanced laser technology to tighten sagging skin and eliminate excess fat, offering a more defined and youthful jawline without the need for surgery. During the treatment, ultra-thin optical fibres are carefully placed under the skin. These fibres deliver laser energy that heats the tissue, melting away fat while also boosting collagen production. The result is smoother, firmer skin and a more contoured look.

Final Thoughts

There are several reasons a double chin can develop. If you're not sure it's due to genetics, try weight loss, cardio exercises, and chin exercises before considering a more invasive procedure. Before starting any diet or exercise plan, it's important to talk to your doctor. They can help address any health concerns, guide you in setting realistic weight loss goals, and suggest a diet that suits your lifestyle. If diet and exercise don't improve your double chin, discuss with your doctor whether a more advanced treatment or procedure could be an option for you.

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Our team is glad to talk you through anything before you book.

  • There’s no fast way to get rid of a double chin, but with time, effort, and a healthy lifestyle, you can reduce it. If weight gain is the cause, eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help.
  • Chin exercises don't directly target fat deposits, so they won’t eliminate a double chin. While general exercise can help, it won’t specifically reduce the fat under your chin.
  • If a double chin is due to excess weight, losing weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise can help reduce it. However, genetics and ageing can also play a role.
  • Surgery is the most effective way to reduce a double chin. While non-invasive treatments like targeted exercises, massages, and injections can help, surgery tends to give the best results.
