How Does the Revision Eyelid Surgery
Procedure Work?
Revision Surgery is a highly unique procedure that depends entirely on the individual patient and their unique condition. For this reason, the initial consultation is of utmost importance. However, Revision Surgery can be challenging because we often only discover the extent of internal scarring during the operation. Additionally, previous fat loss in the periorbital area or prior filler treatments can also affect the success of the procedure. The recovery time following Revision Surgery can be longer, especially if the lymphatic system has been affected, as the eyelids may take longer to recover. With over two decades of surgical experience around the eyes, Dr. Sabrina is a blepharoplasty revision specialist who achieves some excellent results.

Patient Questions About Eyelid Revision Surgery
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the risks of Eyelid Correction Surgery?
The risks of Revision Surgery include:
- Infection: Occasionally, stitches may become infected or inflamed, but this can be swiftly resolved with oral and topical antibiotics.
- Scarring: Scars are often hidden in skin folds or the inner part of the lid. Stitches are visible for the first week and then create a faint scar when removed. Scars may appear thickened and red for 1 to 2 weeks but gradually become almost invisible. Silicone scar remodelling gel can help improve the appearance of thickened or reddened scars, but treatment needs to be continued for several months for good results.
- Large bruise or haematoma: Remember to use ice packs regularly, avoid heavy exercise for 2 weeks after surgery, and stop taking aspirin and other anticoagulants 2 weeks before the operation. If you do get a hematoma, you may need to undergo surgery again to remove the blood clot and have your stitches redone, which could result in a worse scar.
- Theoretical risk to vision: Eyelid surgery carries a very small risk of damaging the optic nerve, but the risk is much smaller than a normal car journey risk.
- “Hollow” appearance: This is rare but can occur – usually when too much fat has been removed.
- Temporary poor blink: Generally, blinking returns to normal within 12 weeks.
What is the recovery time following Revision Blepharoplasty?
The downtime after Revision Blepharoplasty Surgery can vary from patient to patient because each procedure is unique. As a general rule, most patients typically recover within 1-2 weeks for Upper-Lid Blepharoplasty and about 2-3 weeks for Lower-Lid Blepharoplasty. Bruising may last for up to 2 weeks, and full recovery is expected to take anywhere between 4 to 12 weeks.
Is a scar revision painful?
Even with local anaesthesia, you might still feel some pressure or push during the surgery, but you shouldn’t feel any sharp pain. The surgeon may cut around the scar to remove it or make several cuts near or on the scar in a specific pattern. This pattern helps to make the incision less noticeable.
Is eyelid revision surgery safe?
Yes, Eyelid revision surgery, also known as revision blepharoplasty, can be safe when done by a qualified surgeon in a proper medical facility. However, like with any surgical operation, some risks and problems must be addressed like scarring, bleeding, and infection. It’s important to follow the surgeon’s instructions before and after the surgery.
When is the best time to do Revision Blepharoplasty?
The best time for Eyelid revision surgery is generally 6-12 months after the original injury. This waiting period allows the scar to fully mature and the surrounding tissue to soften, which is ideal for surgical revision.
When can I go back to work after getting eyelid correction surgery?
After getting eyelid correction surgery, it’s best to take one to two weeks off work to give your body time to heal. If your job is physically demanding, you might need to take more time off. After the first week, you may start feeling better and be able to go back to work, depending on how you’re healing and the demands of your job. Just remember to take it easy on your eyes for a few days after the surgery.
