What is Tear Trough Filler?
The tear trough is the inner area of the lower eyelid and the upper border of the inner cheek). Age-related volume loss in this area results in the appearance of hollows, bags under the eyes, and dark circles underneath them. Tear trough fillers are a useful treatment that restores lost volume and minimises the appearance of hollows and dark circles. With over 20 years of experience treating complex facial anatomy, Dr. Shah-Desai is an oculoplastic surgeon who created a biplanar technique of correcting the tear trough deformity called Eye-Boost™ achieving natural-looking results that give the patient a younger, fresher, less tired-looking appearance.

How Does Tear Trough Filler
Procedure Work?
Tear trough fillers are a nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatment. Initially, we capture your picture so you may compare the before and after of your treatment. During the procedure, we start by numbing the tear trough area with topical anaesthetic and then the team waits a few minutes for the area around your eyelids to go numb. The procedure takes around 15 minutes, during which Dr. Sabrina carefully injects filler beneath the skin in tiny aliquots using a very fine needle or cannula. After that, she will assess how the filler addresses your dark circles and volume deficit; if required, she will apply more filler to specific locations. Following the procedure, she also provides you with expert skincare guidance to assist preserve and protect the delicate skin around your eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose tear trough fillers treatment?
Tear trough fillers are an effective way to treat dark circles under the eyes and under-eye hollows. By injecting filler under the eyes, we fill the volume lost by ageing – lightening dark circles and filling under eye hollows and wrinkles. This treatment also improves skin quality by boosting collagen production & hydrating skin from the inside.
Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr Shah-Desai has over 20 years of experience and delivers safe, effective and natural-looking tear trough results. She has pioneered the Eye-Boost™ technique – which takes a 360 approach to rejuvenating tired eyes. This treatment volumises pronounced tear troughs, plumps hollows and rejuvenates the under-eye zone by precisely injecting a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler along the skin of the lower eyelid and tear trough.
Do tear trough fillers work for eye bags and dark circles?
Yes – tear trough fillers are an excellent way to treat dark circles, mild eye bags and under-eye hollows. If your eye bags are moderate to severe, you may want to consider a lower eyelid blepharoplasty.
What are the popular tear trough fillers?
The dermal fillers we use are made from hyaluronic acid – a substance that occurs naturally in the body. These types of fillers are biodegradable, which means that they will gradually be absorbed as the gel breaks down and water takes its place. When totally absorbed, the filler gel disappears unnoticed from the body.
How long does tear trough filler last?
Most patients keep their results for 6-18 months. However, the period of time a tear trough treatment lasts varies by individual. This is determined by a variety of factors, including your age, skin type, lifestyle, and physical activity. For moderate to severe eye bags, consider eye bag removal surgery, which provides benefits that last 10 years or more.
Do tear trough fillers hurt?
We apply topical anaesthesia under the eyes for 10-15 minutes before your treatment, meaning that the tear trough filler injections are virtually painless. The fillers themselves also contain an anaesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable.
When will I see a result from under-eye fillers?
The procedure normally takes less than 15 minutes, and the tear trough fillers produce instant results. The procedure can cause extremely slight swelling, so while the area will appear more filled right away, we recommend waiting a week to see the full effect. If you have a pigment problem in your under eyes as well as a tear trough insufficiency, you will want a specialised skincare regimen to remove this pigmentation. In this case, the fillers will provide immediate relief from shadowing and thin skin issues, but it will take several weeks to address the pigmentation issue.
Will it look natural?
We’ve all seen celebrities who have ‘filler faces’ with puffy cheeks who don’t look like themselves anymore. This is what happens when a practitioner has placed too much filler in the wrong places, without understanding facial anatomy.
Fillers are simply products used to replace the volume we lose in our faces as we age. If done subtly and in proportion to the patient’s natural beauty, you will have natural-looking, age-appropriate results.
What if I don’t like the result?
Tear trough fillers can take a few weeks to settle. If after this period you don’t like them, they can be dissolved by injecting hyaluronidase, which takes less than 24 hours to work. That means if you’re ever unhappy with the result, it’s quick and easy to go back to your normal self.
What does recovery look like after tear trough fillers?
There’s negligible downtime after tear trough fillers – most people can go back to work immediately after your treatment. Keep in mind that some patients experience bruising and mild swelling (although others don’t). So, it’s best to leave two weeks before any important social events.
What are the risks associated with tear trough fillers?
Tear trough filler treatments, commonly known as dermal filler injections and hyaluronic acid fillers, are typically safe but may have negative effects. The most prevalent transient adverse effects are as follows:
- Swelling
- Granuloma (small area of swelling or inflammation)
- Infection
- Bruising
- Bruises and lumps usually visible for 3-7 days
- Blindness (very rare)
Who is not the right candidate for the tear trough filler?
The following individuals are not suitable candidates for tear trough fillers:
- Those with a known allergy to the product or lidocaine
- Individuals with an active skin or systemic infection
- People who have consumed alcohol, as it may increase the risk of bruising
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding mothers
