Treatment Summary
Our faces age for many reasons, gravity tends to pull soft facial tissues downward. Heredity also plays a role. Often chronic rubbing of the eyelids and preferentially sleeping on one side can accelerate normal aging changes on the same side. Over time our cheeks begin to sag, the crease running from the nostrils to the sides of the mouth is accentuated, and our jaw line and chin lose their smooth, refined appearance. As we age we also tend to lose some of our muscle tone, facial fat and our skin loses some of its elasticity, leading to more sagging of our features.
Exposure to ultraviolet light plays a role as well. People who spend a lot of time outdoors when the sun is strongest, often have prematurely aged skin, irrespective of their ethnic characteristics. These people may seek eyelid rejuvenating surgery in their forties or even younger.
